I have fuzzy, early memories of summers on Sanibel, riding on the seat on the back of my dad’s bike.

The first lighthouse I remember is the Sanibel Island Light, or the Point Ybel Light. I was happy to see it standing there, stoic and timeless as ever. Lighthouses strike me as both melancholy and hopeful, especially in the rain. I left the shop and drove to one of my favorite spots in the city, West Point Lighthouse in Discovery Park. You can learn about the indigenous, pre-settlement history and the military history of the park here.Īn excerpt from my book, The Year I Became Snail Mail Superstar : You can find information about hiking in Discovery Park here. You can visit the official Discovery Park website here. I visited the park recently during the coronavirus era and had no problem finding a place to park near the main park entrance.

Free street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhoods. NOTE: All Seattle Parks parking lots are currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, if you have an elderly family member, a handicapped person, or small children with you, you can get a parking permit at the Visitors Center which will allow you to drive down to the beach and park near the lighthouse. (The park staff is extremely proactive about ticketing cars and asking people to leave!) There are beautiful hiking trails to get down to the beach and the lighthouse, which is my favorite way to visit the spot. Parking at the lighthouse is extremely limited and you must have a parking pass to legally park there. That’s the spot in Discovery Park that my son always begs to visit and never wants to leave. A pretty incredible new playground was installed in the park in 2017.

I love visiting the park and walking the loop in all four seasons to see how it changes throughout the year. The 2.8 mile loop trail is perennial favorite. I’ve spent just as many wonderful rainy days in the park, too. The view of Puget Sound and both the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges is absolutely incredible on a clear day. You can completely forget that you’re in a major city while in Discovery Park. I spent countless hours wandering the park alone as well as with family and friends. Keep going and you will get back to boulder territory where additional hidden treasures await.I lived within walking distance of Discovery Park in Magnolia for 6 years.

These are quire interesting, especially where the water is trapped. As you round the point at the lighthouse, significant sandbars develop. There is much to be explored here! Stay towards the edges of this system- the interior is quite slick and you are at high risk of stepping on someone.

About halfway between North Beach and the lighthouse there is a patch of rocks entrenched in seaweed. There are a few notable features on this route. From here you can make your way south, around West Point Lighthouse, all the way to the Magnolia Bluffs.

You'll want to get here at least an hour before the lowest tide. It is a very special place.Īn optimal low-tide route starts at the North Beach, about a thirty minute walk from the north parking lot. There is evidence that up until end of the last glacial period, for almost 10,000 years, people have used this land for trade, gathering resources, meeting and preparing food. Its territory includes land that was important to the native ancestors of the Suquamish, Duwamish, Muckleshoot and Tulalip nations. Discovery Park is the crown jewel of Seattle Parks.
